We want to entertain people with history which is visually pleasing, grounded in scholarship, and properly researched at the same time.
Our golden rules:
1) We only use academic sources and always try to stick to the consensus opinion.
2) We always list our sources in description of our videos.
3) We make clear when we deviate from the prior two rules.
Education: Between the two of us we hold two Master's degrees in history from the university of Bern, Switzerland and one degree as a history teacher from the Bern University of Teacher Education. Both of us worked at the University of Bern as teaching assistants.
We wrote an article about our experience as content creators which was published in a collective volume edited by Dr. Kilian Baur and Robert Trautmannsberger: www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110792898-005/html
We also held a few talks about our journey on RUclips at the universities of Eichstätt (Germany), Fribourg and Zürich (Switzerland).

The Catalan Grand Company: The First Free Company in History
This is the story of how a band of Catalan outlaws who lived on the frontier between the Muslim and Spanish kingdoms became some of the most sought-after mercenaries in history, defeating the Ottomans, the Byzantine Empire, and finally becoming the masters of Athens. Called the Grand Catalan Company, they were arguably one of the first-or even the first-mercenary companies in history. They usually hired themselves out to the highest bidder but only as long as they got paid. Many an emperor or duke who hired the Catalan Company learned this the hard way.

Free Companies: The Age of Mercenary Companies
Просмотров 135 тыс.14 дней назад
Renaissance Italy was marked by both continuous warfare and economic growth. Against this backdrop arose the Condotta, the contract system of hiring mercenaries, which was arguably the most distinct characteristic of the period. Initially, soldiers hired themselves out to the highest bidder as “free lances,” the lance being the smallest unit of army organization at the time. This is the origin ...

It was this final assault that inspired many of the...

In this video we discuss how the cavalry’s long-held dominant position on the battlefield was challenged by pure infantry armies in the 15th century. To show this in an exemplary way we will look at the role the Old Swiss Confederacy played in this development. Before we continue: none of this means that the later French Gendarmes, Winged Hussars or German Black Riders were ineffective or unimp...

The Highland Charge was the shock tactic that scored the Scottish clans of the 17th and 18th centuries a reputation as fearless and fierce fighters. But this charge is usually only known for its disastrous application at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It was recently quite well depicted in the TV-Series Outlander, which we’ll use along side our own artwork at some points in the video for illus...

The decisive moment seems to came after Austria-Ottoman war which means there are roughly a lull moment in the siege for 10 years. And since Ottoman cannot fully blockade Candia due to Venetian navy, that means Candia are not fully besieged and give Venetian opportunity to bolstered Candia defense once Ottoman return. Which i find amusing because the invasion of Crete start with a quite successful strategm of war by pretending to invade Malta but the Gazi Pasha failure to conquer Candia itself before the Jannisary retracted had bloated the siege for 21 years.
As someone who have a time machine, this video is very helpful
Would the English longbowmen not be considered an earlier professional army compared to the Gendarmes?
The scottish schiltrons during the first scottish war of independance back in the 14th century. Also battle of Courtrai 1302 where the goedendag used by the flemish were excellent at repelling the french's charges.

1:35 it is a detail but "your majesty" or "sire" is more accurate to apostrophize the king of France
I agree with all the technical aspects of the formations and weapons, but I think it also leaves out the simple factor, that the swiss normally had a strict no prisoners rule, for the simple fact, that a nobleman's ransom was a fortune for any farmer and would be a risk to the formation for people chasing after it. I also think that this plays into some of the fear and terror of those battles.
5:19. That is an expert segue my friend.
But what if they used Level III enchanted trebuchets?
There is a very obvious error in this video, and it was intentional The Shang Dynasty was not the first dynasty in China at all. The Xia Dynasty was the first dynasty in China The Xia Dynasty was not a void dynasty as he said except for historical documents. There are no ruins to prove it. On the contrary, there is a huge city ruins in the village of Erlitou, Henan Province, with huge city walls, city arterial roads, eight palaces and many noble tombs unearthed in one corner of the city, as well as bronze workshops and weapons, jade, pottery, and more. The urban underground drainage pipe network must be made of ceramics. The ruins of this city date back to 3,800 years ago, which is obviously 500-600 years earlier than the last capital of the Shang Dynasty, "Yin Ruins". Moreover, this site was first discovered in 1976 and has been excavated for more than 50 years now. This site is very famous in the Chinese archaeological community. Although it does not have a systematic text unearthed like the Yin Ruins, it also has 500 pottery words, which is obvious. It was the last capital of the First Dynasty of China, because the location of this area and the time of the city's decline are consistent with historical documents in C14 You unilaterally avoided this important site and chose to skip it directly, saying that the Shang Dynasty was the first dynasty in China. This is obviously a very amateurish approach.
I never comment on videos but here I really want to salute the efforts to use the correct prononciations for names of cities, people and more. French, Dutch and all impressively correct, super work!
A game based on 17/18th century seige warfare would be amazing
Yeah, the Total War series are disappointing when it comes to sieges.
i believe that in prehistory war was rare because it was simply too costly for a hunter gatherer society to fight their equivalent when they had to hunt animals easier than their fellow hunters
European noblemen's only weakness: Unable not to charge
I visited a lot of vauban's forts. Very impressive walls
I wonder if Cadia was inspired by this story?
It's not fucking "Bō" it's "BoW" as in - after a performance, an actor takes a BOW!
I thought most single combats were fought during the prebattle phase as a way to boost moral, at least thats how the examples i can remember from history were used
Huh. While both K&G and Sandrhoman tell the story for siege of Belgrade and that the Hungarian take Ottoman bait. In here however the peasant are basicly an auxilliary troops for Hungary and seems to affect the battle little(narratively) while in K&G, the peasant are what safe the Belgrade because they're the one that sally out to loot and resist the Ottoman which allow Hunyadi to join and repulse the staggered Ottoman. However it's an old K&G so probably the video coverage would change later once Ottoman history catch up into Siege of Belgrade
I was looking for Videos on the Siege of Cadia but this is just as good. Very nice Video

If the Habsburger wouldnt hide in Linz with more than 200 k soldiers and fought against the Sultan Suleiman they would loose for 100 percent. Suleiman attacked Vienna only to intimidate the Habsburger and lock them to a open field battle. After the ottomans couldnt find the hiding soldiers the Sultan wrote a message to Sharlken where he said come to Vienna to fight me like a man and don't hide but still the Habsburger didnt answer and kept hiding. If they dared to face him probably whole Europe would belong to the ottomans💀💀. That was just unlucky for the ottoman empire
